SHIVER, the first feature in competition presented at the tenth edition of the Ravenna Nightmare Festival, brought viewers of the film up to the threshold of horror,
Julian Richards' film is distinguished by a markedly popular approach to staging and narrative development. From a structural point of view SHIVER, from the beginning, appears deeply immersed to the core in the dynamics of gender and ready to follow those dictates without any willingness to deviate. Already, the beginning set in California ("twelve years ago," indicated by a chronological caption), with the first victim of the "Griffin", a sadistic serial killer who severs the heads of women after killing them with a garrote and thereafter abuses the corpses - appears to move effectively on predetermined tracks. But, this is only a superficial impression, because actually it feeds on an interest in the Griffin's motivations for his bloody modus operandi: Indeed, it is precisely when the screenplay searches for the monster's psychiatric background (with an impulsive, though shortsighted flashback) an orchestrated mechanism written by Robert D. Weinbach who is also, the film's producer, jams leaving out some crack. The scenic function of the crafty and sly serial murderer (a truly remarkable interpretation by John Jarratt - seemingly meek but capable of unspeakable atrocities, always with an enigmatic smile on his face) is not to be traced because of his immoral acts, but rather in how they are committed.
The severed heads, the ephemeral hunting trophies that the Griffin collects, akin to a mad scientist grappling with a monstrous redefinition of the human body, are somehow both the sense of irreparable nature of the gesture – the lack of a skull, the only offshoot of the human trunk without which it is impossible to survive – is the desire of possession likely to remain unfulfilled for an impotent and mediocre man in the larger sense of the term: the conservation of the rudimentary heads also stresses his childlike desire to freeze the beauty, expose it and worship it in his own way. For this variety of reasons SHIVER rises in momentum at a time when the murderous intentions of the Griffin are replaced by his uncanny, monomaniacal, obsessive hunting of the victim who escaped the clutches of this monster. The film becomes focused on the relationship between Rood, the killer, and the young and comely Wendy Alden, played by Danielle Harris, who miraculously manages to survive all assaults: a perennially unbalanced relationship, not always in favour of the Griffin. Wendy is a weak and timid element of the social chain of the city staged vividly by events in Portland – She has a job that is not rewarding from a professional and economic point of view and, a disgraceful and obsessive mother, a lover for whom there is only a cold affection. There is, in her condition of being prey, an opportunity to vindicate the right to existence, up to the extreme. When Shiver moves away from the night-time glow of the city's "theater of the killings", to the shack in the countryside where the Griffin leads Wendy, hoping to recreate a deformed copy of a traditional home, the film ménage is the ultimate perfection, reaching heights of sublime surrealism that identify once and for all the peculiarities of expression.
Written with care and intelligence – even in cliche descriptions of the inadequacy of the police – and directed with remarkable visual vitality by Richards (can delete>despite the tight budget<), SHIVER deserves to find its own place within the vast universe of serial killer thrillers - even if only for the sequence of dialogue between the murderer and the womens' heads that he severed, or for the final carnage in Wendy's office; sequences that will remain long imprinted in the minds of the viewers.
